I've always been a bit concerned about telling the story of the woman I saw touching up her lipstick at 50mph in a 30mph zone, looking more closely at her rear-view mirror to check the results rather than watching the road where she was gaining on me at about 20mph. I didn't want people to think I was biased against women drivers, because I hope I'm not.

I'm a bit happier now because yesterday I saw a guy on the A52 in Ratcliffe on Trent making absolutely sure that his hair was perfect. I wouldn't object to that, except he was in the outside lane behind the wheel of a Focus in the middle of the rush hour. He too had moved his mirror and was therefore completely unaware of the queue of traffic behind him at the lights. Even after said lights went green, he lurched away at about half speed with the wheel in one hand and a hair brush in the other. Wouldn't have been a problem if the car had an automatic gearbox, but it didn't.
